Unlike conventional wheel nuts, Nord-Lock uses tension rather than friction to secure bolted joints. Each nut is permanently attached to a pair of wedge-locking washers. On one side, radial teeth grip the wheel surface; on the other, cam faces create a wedge effect. Because the cam angle is greater than the thread pitch, any attempt at rotation is blocked, keeping the wheel firmly in place.
