When lithium-ion batteries burn they do so, fiercely. The large amount of energy stored within converts to heat and it's difficult to cool even small appliances sufficiently to extinguish them.
The media in this extinguisher is a high-efficiency liquid, which provides cooling to the batteries and due to its low surface tension can rapidly penetrate to extinguish burning material. Thereby putting out the fire, both in the battery itself and in the appliance as a whole, and crucially, lowering the temperature of the battery to halt thermal runaway.
In February 2021, 3rd party independent fire testing was carried out at CVTC, USA to evaluate the lithium-ion battery fire-fighting ability of the LB6. Against the developed fire test protocol (as there is no standardised test protocol for this risk), the LB6 extinguisher successfully passed the 360-watt-hours (Wh) fire test. To put this into context, typical mobile phones, tablets & laptop batteries would be in the region of 10Wh to 60Wh, with cordless tool batteries typically ranging from 100Wh to 240Wh.
